When you think of 'Botox' ™, you often think about cosmetics and anti-wrinkle treatments, however, it is also used to treat migraines. If you have constant headaches that won't go away, you may be suffering from 'chronic migraines'.
About 1-2% of people worldwide suffer from what is called 'chronic migraine'. The pain of migraine headaches can be severe, and is often accompanied by excessive sensitivity to light, loud sounds or smells/odours, as well as nausea and/or vomiting. People who are diagnosed with chronic migraine have usually been getting headaches on 15 or more days in every month for at least 3 months. Experiencing headaches and migraines so frequently has a huge impact on life and what sufferers are able to do.
The treatment is preventative for chronic migraine. This means that rather than stop your headaches once they have started, it aims to reduce the number of days on which you get headaches and improve the quality of life of people suffering from chronic migraine.
For more information about chronic migraine, what the treatment is and how it may be able to help people like you who experience headaches and migraines.

Botox ™ is well known for improving cosmesis by treating wrinkles and lines in the upper face. Botox ™ is also used to treat functional problems in ophthalmology and other areas. Botox ™is one type of the injection.
Botox ™ works by irreversibly blocking the release of a neurotransmitter at the nerve to muscle junction, hence paralysing the muscle. The muscle activity recovers as new nerve to muscle junctions sprout. This normally takes 3 to 4 months. Hence, Botox ™ injections need to be repeated 2-3 times a year, although the time interval increases as more doses are given. Botox ™ has a large clinical dose range, and is thus very safe as the amount used e.g. for facial lines, is very small. The drug works locally and there is no significant systemic spread.
